What Should You Clean After Every Use?

The basket, crisper plate and other removable parts that come into contact with food should be cleaned after every use.

Even when they do not look particularly dirty, there can still be oil, crumbs, seasoning and small pieces of food left behind, especially after foods that release fat or juices.

Manufacturer guidance generally recommends cleaning removable cooking parts after each use.

Once cooled, warm water, mild dish soap and a soft, non abrasive sponge are usually enough, subject to the instructions for your particular model.

Some Foods Leave More Mess Than Others

Not every meal leaves the basket looking the same.

Fish, marinated meat and foods that release oil or juices can be a completely different story.

I prefer looking at what is actually left in the air fryer.

If there is grease, food residue, sauce, crumbs or liquid underneath the crisper plate, clean it before the next use.

And yes, lift the crisper plate — the top can look reasonably clean while quite a lot is happening underneath.

What About Air Fryer Liners?

Air fryer liners can certainly make cleanup easier, particularly with foods that might drip or leave sticky residue.

But a liner does not make the air fryer self cleaning.

Grease and liquid can still reach other parts of the basket, and the crisper plate and basket should still be checked after cooking.

Liners also need to be used correctly. They should not block the airflow your air fryer relies on, and parchment must be kept safely away from the heating element. Lightweight parchment should not be left loose in an operating air fryer without food holding it securely in place.

Do You Need to Clean the Inside After Every Use?

Not necessarily to the same extent as the removable parts.

Once unplugged and completely cool, have a look inside and wipe away visible grease or food splatter rather than allowing layers of residue to accumulate.

The heating area also needs occasional attention, but it should be treated carefully — do not spray water or cleaning products directly onto electrical or heating components.

Always follow the cleaning instructions supplied with your particular air fryer.

A full deep clean is different from this everyday maintenance.

When Does an Air Fryer Need a Deeper Clean?

There is no magic number of uses that applies to everybody.

Someone using an air fryer once a week is going to have a very different cleaning routine from someone cooking in theirs almost every day.

Instead, pay attention to what the appliance is telling you — visible grease buildup, stubborn residue, lingering food smells or unexpected smoke can all be signs that routine washing is no longer enough.

Do Not Wait Until It Looks Terrible

This is probably the biggest lesson: cleaning an air fryer regularly is much easier than trying to rescue one after grease and food have been repeatedly heated onto the surfaces.

A quick wash after cooking may feel like one more job when you have just finished dinner, but it is usually far easier than dealing with stubborn buildup later.

Let the appliance cool, clean the removable parts according to the manufacturer's instructions, check underneath the crisper plate, and make sure everything is completely dry before putting it back together.
